What to Look for on a Daycare Tour, A Parent Checklist
A tour is your best tool for choosing childcare. Photos and websites can only show you so much. When you walk through a program in person, you learn how it really feels. Here is a simple checklist to keep in mind when you visit Joyful Learning Childcare or any program in the Fargo Moorhead area.
Safety and security
Start with the basics. Is the entry secure, so that not just anyone can walk in. Are the spaces clean and free of hazards. Ask how the program handles drop off and pickup, and how they make sure children leave only with the right adults. Ask whether the staff is trained in first aid and CPR. Our caregivers are First Aid, CPR, and AED certified, and you can read more on our Health and Safety page.
Cleanliness
Look around. Are the rooms tidy and well kept. Are toys and surfaces clean. Is there a sink for handwashing and a clear routine around it. A clean space is not about being perfect. It is about whether the program takes daily care seriously.
How the caregivers interact with children
This is the heart of it. Watch how the adults talk to the children. Do they get down to a child’s level. Are they warm, patient, and attentive. Do the children seem comfortable going to them. A caring, steady caregiver is the single most important thing you are looking for. Children thrive when they feel safe and loved.
The daily schedule
Ask what a typical day looks like for a child your child’s age. A good day has a gentle rhythm: time for play, time for stories and music, time outside, meals and snacks, and rest. You are not looking for every minute to be scheduled. You are looking for a thoughtful balance of activity and calm. Our programs are built around play, with age appropriate learning woven through the day.
Communication
How will you hear about your child’s day. Ask how the program keeps parents in the loop. At Joyful Learning Childcare, we send daily updates through our app, so even while you are at work you can see how your child is doing. Good communication builds trust, and trust is everything in childcare.
Meals and snacks
Ask whether meals and snacks are provided and how the program handles allergies. We provide nutritious meals and snacks through the day and work with families to keep every child safe and comfortable.
How you feel
After the practical questions, pay attention to how the place feels and how you feel in it. Do the children seem happy and busy. Does the program answer your questions honestly. Can you picture your child here. Your instincts are part of the decision, so listen to them.
